The story goes, that the goddess Atargatis, who was the mother of a queen, was in love with a mortal shepherd but accidentally killed him. After this, and filled with shame, she threw herself into a lake and tried to take the form of a fish, but the waters refused to conceal her divine beauty. Thereafter she lived as a mermaid - human above the waist, fish below.
